Spello is a historic town situated in the province of Perugia, in the Umbria region of central Italy. Built on the slopes of Mount Subasio, this ancient Roman colony, originally named Hispellum, has preserved much of its historical character. The town is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including Roman gates and walls that still partially encircle the old center.
Spello has a rich cultural heritage, particularly evident in its religious art and architecture. The town houses significant works by Renaissance painter Pinturicchio in the Baglioni Chapel within the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The town maintains strong cultural traditions, notably the Infiorate di Spello, an annual event where elaborate floral carpets are created along the streets. Local museums and historical buildings showcase the town's Roman origins and subsequent medieval development.
