Ploegsteert is a village in the Walloon municipality of Comines-Warneton, located in western Belgium near the French border. The area gained historical significance during World War I, when it was a crucial location along the Western Front. British soldiers nicknamed it "Plugstreet."
The village and its surrounding woodlands were the sites of intense trench warfare and several significant battles. Today, Ploegsteert is known for its World War I memorials and commemorative sites, including the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing, which honors over 11,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Belgium and have no known grave. The area also features the Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery and various other historical sites that attract visitors interested in World War I history.
