Belgium is a country that borders the North Sea, centrally located in Europe. The capital of Belgium is Brussels, where the institutions of the European Union as well as the NATO are located.

Brussels, but also other cities like Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent and Mechelen are very popular with tourists because of their historic buildings, beguinages, museums and architecture. Especially the Art Nouveau from Horta, among others, is special.

Belgium has a rich tradition of painting. This began around the 15th century with Flemish Primitives, with among other van Eyck and Memling and continued to flourish in the Renaissance and Baroque period with Matsijs, Bruegel the Elder, Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck. Famous names from the 20th century are Permeke, Magritte, Delvaux and Ensor.
