Cromford is a historic village in Derbyshire, England, that played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution. It is most notably known as the site of Richard Arkwright's first water-powered cotton spinning mill, established in 1771. This mill, along with Arkwright's other developments in the area, formed part of what is now the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
The village retains much of its industrial heritage architecture, including workers' housing, the mill complex, and the Cromford Canal. Beyond its industrial significance, Cromford is situated in the beautiful Peak District, surrounded by limestone cliffs and wooded hillsides. The village's cultural heritage is preserved through various historic buildings, including the Market Place and the Cromford Mill complex, which now houses museums, shops, and educational facilities that tell the story of the area's crucial role in industrial history.
