Source

Cromford Mills has been described as the most preserved textile heritage site in the world. It is from here that Sir Richard Arkwright developed technology that changed the world by creating the modern factory system. Following 50 years of dilapidation the site has been rescued by the Arkwright Society which saved it from demolition and secured World Heritage status. Today the Arkwright Society relies on fundraising and it's own income generation to continue to maintain, manage and restore Cromford mills.

Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mills offers visitors an insightful look into the industrial heritage of England. Located in the picturesque village of Cromford, this site is considered the birthplace of the modern factory system. The museum provides a comprehensive overview of the cotton spinning industry and its impact on social and economic changes during the Industrial Revolution.

Visitors often appreciate the well-preserved mill buildings and the informative exhibits that detail the lives of mill workers and the innovative technology of the time. The guided tours are frequently praised for their knowledgeable and engaging guides who bring the history to life. Many reviewers highlight the working water wheel and the demonstrations of cotton spinning as particularly interesting features.

The site also receives positive feedback for its beautiful setting along the river and the surrounding countryside, which offers pleasant walks and scenic views. The on-site café is generally well-regarded, providing a nice spot for refreshments after exploring the mills.

However, some visitors note that certain areas of the site are still under restoration, which can limit access to some parts of the complex. A few reviewers mention that the exhibits could benefit from more interactive elements to engage younger visitors. Additionally, some find the admission price a bit steep, especially for families.

Despite these minor drawbacks, Sir Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mills is generally considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in industrial history. The site offers a balance of educational value and historical significance, set in an attractive location.
