Beech Island is an unincorporated community located in Aiken County, South Carolina. Despite its name, it is not an actual island but rather a historic settlement that dates back to the colonial period.
The area was originally settled in the mid-18th century by English, French, and German immigrants. The community has preserved significant historical sites, including the Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site, which was once the home of James Henry Hammond, a prominent 19th-century South Carolina governor and U.S. Senator. The area is characterized by its rural landscape and agricultural heritage, with several historic buildings and structures that reflect its antebellum past.
While small in size, Beech Island represents an important piece of South Carolina's cultural and historical landscape, particularly in terms of its plantation era history and agricultural development.
