The Hospital in the Rock in Budapest is a hospital-turned-memorial that serves as a grim reminder of the horrors of the war and of the suffering it brings upon the people. It was first opened in 1944 to serve as a hospital for wounded Hungarian civilians who were injured during airstrikes and, eventually, also for the soldiers. The crew of doctors and nurses, who saved thousands of lives, consisted partly of Jewish prisoners, who were forced to be there as part of their labour service. Gradually, the hospital fell into disrepair. It was renovated only in 2007 to be finally opened to the public in 2008. Visiting is not allowed under 6 years.

The Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum offers visitors a glimpse into Hungary's tumultuous 20th-century history. Located beneath Buda Castle Hill, this former hospital and nuclear bunker has been transformed into an educational experience. The museum provides guided tours through its underground corridors, showcasing original medical equipment, wax figures, and displays that depict life during wartime and the Cold War era.
Many visitors appreciate the knowledgeable guides who bring the history to life with their engaging explanations. The authentic atmosphere of the bunker, preserved from its operational days, creates a powerful and somber experience. Guests often comment on the thought-provoking nature of the exhibits, which highlight the realities of war and nuclear threat.
However, some visitors find the tour pace a bit rushed, wishing for more time to explore and absorb the information. The tight spaces and occasional sense of claustrophobia might be challenging for some. A few reviewers mention that the wax figures can be a bit startling or off-putting.
The museum's focus on wartime medical practices and Cold War preparedness offers a unique perspective on Hungarian and European history. While not suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues, it generally receives positive feedback for its educational value and immersive historical experience.
The Hospital in the Rock is a small but very interesting museum. A nice guide takes you on a tour that lasts just under an hour and shows you around the hospital explaining the hard times of the Second World War, the communist era and the plans to use it as a nuclear bunker. Recommended!
