Artis is the oldest zoo in the Netherlands that opened its doors in 1838. The zoo features 27 historic buildings, of which most date from the 19th century. Because of this, Artis has a distinctive charm and a historical dimension that lacks in more modern zoos. The monumental aquarium contains tropical fish and in the monumental birdhouse various birds fly around freely. In the tropical forest many animal species live with and between each other. Artis also features a butterfly pavilion where butterflies flutter.

Artis Royal Zoo has 8 ratings.
Artis Royal Zoo, located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is a well-established and popular attraction that combines a zoo, an aquarium, and a planetarium. Visitors generally appreciate the zoo's historic charm, dating back to 1838, and its integration into the city landscape. The diverse collection of animals, including elephants, giraffes, and penguins, receives positive mentions. Many reviewers commend the zoo's efforts in conservation and education.
The landscaping and gardens within Artis are often praised for their beauty and maintenance, providing a pleasant environment for both animals and visitors. The butterfly garden and the aquarium are frequently highlighted as enjoyable experiences. The planetarium offers an additional educational dimension that sets Artis apart from typical zoos.
However, some visitors note that the enclosures for certain animals, particularly larger species, could be more spacious. This is partly attributed to the zoo's urban location and historical design. A few reviewers mention that some areas of the zoo may benefit from updates or renovations.
The zoo's cafe and restaurant options receive mixed reviews, with some finding them satisfactory and others suggesting room for improvement in terms of variety and value for money.
Accessibility is generally good, with the zoo being easy to navigate for most visitors. However, during peak seasons, some areas can become crowded, which may impact the viewing experience.
Overall, Artis Royal Zoo is regarded as a good destination for families and animal enthusiasts, offering a blend of historical significance and modern zoological practices. While it may not be the largest or most modern zoo, its unique character and central location in Amsterdam make it a worthwhile visit for many.
The zoo itself is fine. I do however have an issue with their online booking system. When we were in Amsterdam last week we tried twice to book tickets online. Both times it said our transactions had been unsuccessful. On checking our credit card they had charged us twice but sent no tickets! Despite a phone call and emails we have not had a refund. I will be taking this up with my credit card supplier- the zoo should not be allowed to effectively steal from your account! So my advice would be NOT to book tickets online especially if you’re not from the Netherlands-i think they assume you won’t chase it up.

Be aware if you book going to the zoo if you book your tickets online you will not be refunded if you have to change dates. They say you can change them but they don’t answer the phones in my experience and take 3 weeks to answer emails so don’t be fooled .

Artis is a wonderful zoo. It is very well-kept with a good number of open spaces for the animals. There are a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles, a butterfly house and a couple of enclosed areas, including the aquarium (a must!). Very well recommended, especially with wonderful weather!
I could visit Artis a hundred times and not get bored. Even if you don't like animals, the zoo has pretty gardens, architecture and rich history.
