Williams is a historic city located in Coconino County, Arizona, often referred to as the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon." Founded in 1881, the city was named after Bill Williams, a mountain man and trader who often traveled through the area. The city sits at an elevation of approximately 6,800 feet (2,100 meters) in the heart of the Kaibab National Forest.
Williams holds significance as the last city on Historic Route 66 to be bypassed by Interstate 40, which occurred in 1984. The city maintains its cultural heritage through preserved historic buildings along its main street, reflecting its railroad and Route 66 legacy. The Williams Depot serves as the southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway, which has been carrying visitors to the Grand Canyon since 1901.
Today, the city combines its rich western heritage with tourism, offering visitors a glimpse into Arizona's past while serving as a cultural and historical hub in northern Arizona.
