Villers-Cotterêts is a historic commune located in northern France, in the department of Aisne, region Hauts-de-France. The town is particularly notable for its impressive Renaissance château, which was built in the 16th century under François I and later became the birthplace of Alexandre Dumas, one of France's most celebrated authors.
The Château de Villers-Cotterêts has recently been transformed into the Cité internationale de la langue française, dedicated to the French language and its heritage. This is particularly fitting as it was in this very château that François I signed the famous Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts in 1539, which made French the official administrative language of France.
The town is surrounded by the Forest of Retz, one of the largest forests in northern France, which has historically played an important role in the region's economic and cultural development.
