Topsail Beach is a small coastal town located on Topsail Island, a 26-mile-long barrier island off the coast of North Carolina. The town, incorporated in 1963, is situated in Pender County and represents the southern end of the island.
The area has a rich history dating back to colonial times, when pirates allegedly used the island to hide their ships while waiting to prey on merchant vessels - the ships' top sails visible above the dunes gave the island its name. During World War II, the island served as a site for Operation Bumblebee, a top-secret missile testing program.
Today, Topsail Beach maintains its small-town character while serving as a popular coastal destination known for its natural beauty, maritime heritage, and sea turtle conservation efforts. The town's cultural identity is deeply connected to its coastal location, with local institutions and programs focusing on marine education, environmental preservation, and the area's unique military history.
