Tappan is a historic hamlet located in Rockland County, New York State, with significant ties to American Revolutionary War history. The community, originally settled by Dutch colonists in the 1600s, maintains much of its historic character through preserved buildings and sites.
One of its most notable historical events was the trial and execution of British spy Major John André in 1780, who was involved in Benedict Arnold's plot to surrender West Point to the British. The '76 House, also known as DeWint House, served as General George Washington's headquarters during the Revolutionary War and still stands today as a museum and National Historic Site.
The area combines its rich historical heritage with a small-town atmosphere, featuring several historical buildings and landmarks that reflect its Dutch colonial and Revolutionary War past.
