During World War II, Camp Shanks played a crucial role as a staging area for troops departing from the New York Port of Embarkation for overseas service. The camp processed an impressive 1.3 million service personnel, which included 75% of those who participated in the D-Day invasion. This significant contribution to the war effort underscores the historical importance of Camp Shanks.
In addition to serving as a staging area for American troops, Camp Shanks also played a role in housing prisoners of war during 1945. The camp accommodated German and Italian prisoners, further adding to its historical significance during World War II.
Today, the land that once housed Camp Shanks is traversed by the expanded Palisades Interstate Parkway. In June 1994, a small museum was opened near the site, located at the intersection of New York State Routes 303 and 340. This museum serves as a testament to the historical significance of Camp Shanks and offers visitors a glimpse into its past.
