Sutri is an ancient town located in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region of central Italy. With a history dating back to Etruscan times, Sutri was an important settlement along the Via Cassia, the ancient Roman road connecting Rome to northern Italy.
The town is particularly known for its remarkable archaeological heritage, including a well-preserved Roman amphitheater carved entirely out of tufa rock, and the unique Mithraeum, a temple later converted into the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Parto. These monuments testify to Sutri's significant role in both Etruscan and Roman periods.
The town's medieval center, with its characteristic stone buildings and narrow streets, reflects its continued importance throughout the Middle Ages. Today, Sutri maintains its historical character while serving as a cultural destination that offers insights into multiple layers of Italian history.
