The palace itself is a testament to the ancient Christian roots of the city, dating back to the early centuries of the Middle Ages.
Joseph Bernard Döbbing and the Restructuring of the Palace
The museum is named after Joseph Bernard Döbbing, who served as the bishop of the united dioceses of Nepi and Sutri from 1900 to 1916. Döbbing, born in Germany in 1855, was responsible for a radical restructuring of the bishop's palace, giving it its neo-Gothic structure, adding battlements, a clock tower, a balcony, and other significant modifications to the original 13th-century structure.
Renovation and Transformation into a Museum
The palace, which served as the seat of the diocese of Sutri until 1986, underwent a significant renovation between 2010 and 2018. This renovation was funded by the Lazio Region and the diocese of Civita Castellana. The renovation project, led by architect Romano Adolini, transformed the palace into a museum and created an exhibition space of approximately 1000 square meters.
