Selfkant is the westernmost municipality in Germany, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia near the Dutch border. This rural community has a unique historical significance as it was temporarily transferred to Dutch administration from 1949 to 1963 as part of post-World War II territorial arrangements. The area returned to German control following a treaty between Germany and the Netherlands.
Today, Selfkant consists of several small villages and maintains its agricultural character while serving as an interesting example of European border history. The region preserves local customs and traditions typical of the Lower Rhine cultural area, where German and Dutch influences have historically merged.
