Murfreesboro is a historic town located in Hertford County, North Carolina. Situated along the Meherrin River, this small community was established in 1787 and named after Colonel Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town holds significance in early American history as it served as an important colonial port and trading center.
Murfreesboro was also home to one of the earliest Baptist-affiliated educational institutions in North Carolina, the Chowan Female Institute (now Chowan University), which was founded in 1848. The town's historic district features several well-preserved 18th and 19th-century buildings that reflect its architectural heritage and cultural significance in the region.
