Macugnaga is a picturesque alpine village located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, nestled at the foot of Monte Rosa, the second-highest mountain in the Alps.
Founded by German Walser settlers in the 13th century, the town retains much of its distinctive Walser cultural heritage, visible in its traditional architecture and local customs. The village is known for its mining history, particularly gold mining, which played a significant role in its development from the Middle Ages until the mid-20th century.
Today, Macugnaga serves as both a winter sports destination and a summer hiking base, while maintaining its historical character through preserved buildings and the local Museum of Mountain Culture and Walser Heritage.
