Limavady is a market town in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, situated on the River Roe. The town's name comes from the Irish "Léim an Mhadaidh" meaning "leap of the dog," referring to a legendary tale about a dog leaping across the River Roe to warn of an incoming attack.
With a rich history dating back to the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century, Limavady has developed from a small settlement into a regional center. The town has strong cultural connections, particularly to Irish traditional music, and is notably associated with the famous folk song "Danny Boy," as the tune (known as the Londonderry Air) was collected in the area by Jane Ross in the mid-19th century.
The surrounding area features picturesque landscapes including the Roe Valley Country Park, which preserves both natural heritage and industrial history, particularly relating to the linen industry that once flourished in the region.
