Laurium is a historic village located in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, an area known for its rich copper mining heritage. Founded in 1887 during the region's copper mining boom, Laurium was home to many miners and mining executives who worked in the nearby copper mines.
The village's architectural heritage reflects its prosperous past, with several preserved Victorian-era mansions and buildings that were built by wealthy mining company officials. The most notable among these is the Laurium Manor, an impressive 13,000-square-foot mansion built in 1908 by Thomas H. Hoatson Jr., a successful mining captain.
Today, Laurium maintains its small-town charm while preserving important pieces of American industrial and cultural history through its architecture and local heritage sites.
