Calumet is a historic village located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, once known as the heart of the region's copper mining industry. Founded in 1864, it was originally named "Red Jacket" and served as the center of the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company's operations, one of the most productive copper mining companies in the United States.

The area's rich cultural heritage is reflected in its well-preserved Victorian architecture and historic downtown district, which is part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The community's development was shaped by diverse immigrant groups, particularly from Finland, Croatia, Italy, and other European countries, who came to work in the copper mines.

Today, while the mining industry has ceased, Calumet maintains its historical character through various preserved buildings and cultural institutions that tell the story of its mining past and immigrant heritage.
