Kortrijk is a Belgian city in the south of the province of West Flanders, situated on the River Lys. Kortrijk is known as the “City of Groeninge” or “City of the Golden Spurs” referring to the Battle of Courtrai or the Battle of the Golden Spurs which took place on 11 July 1302 on the Fields of Groeninge. The city has a rich history and historical city center restricted for traffic, with many historic buildings. In the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a major center of the flax industry. Today it is still an important center of the textile industry.
