Downe is a historic village in the London Borough of Bromley, located on the North Downs. The village is most notably known as the home of Charles Darwin, who lived at Down House from 1842 until his death in 1882. It was here that Darwin wrote his groundbreaking work "On the Origin of Species" and conducted many of his scientific experiments in the surrounding countryside.
The village maintains much of its rural character despite its proximity to London, with traditional buildings, including the 13th-century St. Mary's Church, and historic cottages lining its streets. The area's rich natural environment, which inspired Darwin's work, continues to be an important feature of the locality.
