Cookham is a historic village and civil parish on the River Thames in Berkshire, England. The village has a rich cultural heritage, particularly associated with the artist Sir Stanley Spencer, who was born here and spent much of his life capturing the village and its surroundings in his paintings. Spencer referred to Cookham as 'a village in heaven,' and his unique vision of the area can be explored in the Stanley Spencer Gallery, housed in a former Methodist chapel.
The village maintains its traditional character with medieval and Georgian buildings, and has been a source of inspiration for artists and writers throughout history. Besides its artistic legacy, Cookham consists of three areas: Cookham Village, Cookham Rise, and Cookham Dean, each with its own distinct character while maintaining the charm of a Thames-side settlement.
