Cluny is a historic town located in the Saône-et-Loire department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France. The town is primarily known for being the site of the great Benedictine Abbey of Cluny, which was founded in 910 CE and was once one of the most important and influential religious centers in medieval Europe. At its height, the Abbey of Cluny was the largest church in Christendom until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.
Although much of the original abbey was destroyed following the French Revolution, the remaining structures and ruins still stand as a testament to the town's significant religious and architectural heritage. Today, Cluny maintains its medieval character through its well-preserved streets, historic buildings, and architectural elements. The town is also home to the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts et Métiers, one of France's most prestigious engineering schools, which occupies part of the former abbey buildings.
