Clausthal-Zellerfeld is a historic mining town located in the Harz mountains of Lower Saxony, Germany. The town was formed in 1924 through the merger of the formerly separate towns of Clausthal and Zellerfeld. Historically, it was an important center for silver and lead mining since the 16th century, and this mining heritage continues to influence its cultural identity today.

The town is home to the Clausthal University of Technology, one of Germany's oldest technical universities, founded in 1775 as a mining academy. Mining history is preserved and presented in various locations throughout the town, including historic mining sites and water management systems that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Harz Water Management System. The town's cultural landscape is characterized by its traditional architecture, with many buildings reflecting its mining past, and its position as an educational center in the region.
