Bort-les-Orgues is a commune located in the Corrèze department in central France. The town is situated at the foot of the Massif Central mountains and is known for its distinctive volcanic rock formations called "orgues basaltiques" (basalt organs), which gave the town part of its name. These impressive columnar basalt cliffs rise above the town and the artificial lake created by the Bort-les-Orgues dam, built in the 1950s.
The town's cultural heritage is closely tied to its industrial past, particularly in leather working and hydroelectric power generation. The local architecture reflects the region's traditional building styles, with several notable historical buildings including the 15th-century Château de Val, which sits on a peninsula in the lake.
