Binchester is a historic site located in County Durham, England, known primarily for its significant Roman remains. The site, known in Roman times as Vinovia, was home to a Roman fort established around 79 AD that played a crucial role in defending the major Roman road of Dere Street. The fort was occupied for nearly 300 years and housed both cavalry and infantry units.
Archaeological excavations have revealed well-preserved remains of the fort's buildings, including a commanding officer's house with one of the best-preserved Roman bathhouses in Britain. The surrounding civilian settlement (vicus) provides valuable insights into daily life during the Roman occupation of Britain.
Today, the site serves as an important archaeological resource and educational center, offering visitors a glimpse into the region's rich Roman heritage.
