Avignon is a historic city in southeastern France, situated on the banks of the Rhône River. The city is most notably known for its role as the seat of the Catholic papacy from 1309 to 1377, during what became known as the Avignon Papacy. This period left an indelible mark on the city's architecture and cultural heritage, most prominently in the form of the Palais des Papes (Papal Palace), one of Europe's largest Gothic buildings.
The city center, protected by well-preserved medieval ramparts, has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Avignon maintains a significant position in French cultural life, particularly through its annual Festival d'Avignon, one of the world's major performing arts festivals. The city's rich historical heritage is complemented by numerous museums and cultural institutions that showcase both its medieval past and contemporary artistic expressions.
