Almere is a city in the Dutch province of Flevoland and is located on three lakes: Markermeer, Ijmeer and Gooimeer. Due to population growth in Amsterdam in particular after World War II, there was a need for more housing in the region. This resulted in the reclamation of the IJsselmeerpolders and to the creation of Almere.

Almere is a modern and new city located entirely below sea level. The city was named after the lake Almere, a lake that used to be located where the IJsselmeer is now located. The first homes were built there in 1976, so there are many new and modern buildings, and no historic buildings in the downtown area.
