Tower of London and its collection

Tower of London
Source

Also known as Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, The Tower of London was one of the many castles built as part of the Norman Conquest of England. It has been extended several times in the past and has always played a major role in English history. For some time, the Tower was used as a prison. Many notable figures were imprisoned here, including Sir Walter Raleigh with his wife Elizabeth Throckmorton, Guy Fawkes, Anne Boleyn and even Elizabeth I. Besides this, the Tower was used as an armoury, a treasury, a menagerie, the home of the Royal Mint, a public record office, and the home of the Crown Jewels of England.

The Tower of London is a historic castle and fortress located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. This iconic landmark offers visitors a rich blend of history, architecture, and royal heritage.

The Crown Jewels exhibition is a major highlight, showcasing the breathtaking collection of royal regalia and jewels. Many visitors find this display particularly impressive and worth the sometimes long wait times. The White Tower, the oldest part of the complex, houses an extensive collection of arms and armor, providing insight into medieval warfare and royal power.

Guided tours led by the Yeoman Warders, also known as Beefeaters, are highly recommended. These tours offer entertaining and informative narratives about the Tower's history, including its roles as a royal residence, prison, and execution site. The guides' knowledge and humor often receive praise from visitors.

The medieval palace rooms and the Bloody Tower, associated with the mysterious disappearance of the two princes, add to the site's historical intrigue. Some visitors note that these areas can get crowded during peak times.

While many appreciate the well-preserved state of the Tower and its exhibitions, a few visitors mention that the entrance fee is relatively high. However, most feel the experience justifies the cost, especially when allowing sufficient time to explore all areas thoroughly.

The Tower's location offers excellent views of Tower Bridge and the Thames, adding to its appeal. Some visitors suggest arriving early to avoid the largest crowds and to allow ample time to see everything.

Overall, the Tower of London provides a comprehensive and engaging look into British history, combining educational value with visual appeal. Its blend of architecture, historical significance, and well-curated exhibits make it a standout attraction in London.
