Today, the Neues Schloss Meersburg houses several museums, providing a diverse range of exhibits for tourists to explore. The Town Gallery (Städtische Galerie) and the Dornier Museum occupy the 2nd floor, while the Palace Museum of the Prince Bishops (Fürstbischöfliche Schlossmuseum) is located on the 3rd floor. The latter offers visitors the chance to view the residential and representation rooms of the prince bishops, refurnished with contemporary appointments from that era.

Location and Views from Neues Schloss Meersburg

The Neues Schloss Meersburg is situated on a hill overlooking Lake Constance. At the rear of the castle, there is a garden terrace that offers an excellent view of the lower city, the ferry port, and the Swiss coast of Lake Constance. Tourists can access the terrace from the ground floor of the castle or through a staircase near the bridge to the Burg Meersburg, which is closed by a wrought iron gate.

New Castle Reviews

New Castle has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The New Castle in Meersburg, Germany, offers visitors a glimpse into 18th-century baroque architecture and royal life. Located on Lake Constance, this former residence of the Prince-Bishops of Constance impresses with its grand exterior and well-preserved interior. Visitors appreciate the ornate staterooms, particularly the impressive Festsaal (festival hall) with its elaborate ceiling frescoes. The castle's museum showcases period furniture, art, and historical artifacts, providing context to the building's rich past. Many guests find the audio guide helpful in understanding the castle's history and significance. The panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps from the castle's windows and terrace are frequently mentioned as a highlight. However, some visitors note that the exhibition information could be more comprehensive, and a few find the entry fee slightly high. Despite these minor drawbacks, most guests consider the New Castle a worthwhile stop for those interested in German history and baroque architecture. The well-maintained gardens surrounding the castle also receive positive mentions, offering a pleasant area for a stroll after touring the interior.
