Museum Dr. Guislain is housed in the former Hospice Guislain from 1857, the first institution in Belgium specifically built for the treatment of the mentally ill. Dr. Guislain was a pioneer in that field. The museum shows the history of psychiatry and 'madness'. A photo collection illustrates life in a psychiatry and the perception of ‘the weird’. In addition, the museum displays 'outsider art' and Belgian and international developments and figures are covered.

The Museum Dr. Guislain in Ghent, Belgium, offers a thought-provoking exploration of the history of psychiatry and mental health. Housed in a former psychiatric hospital, the museum provides visitors with a unique perspective on the evolution of mental health treatment.
The exhibits are well-curated, presenting a balanced view of both historical and contemporary approaches to mental health care. Many visitors appreciate the museum's honest and respectful treatment of sensitive topics. The permanent collection, which includes medical instruments, artwork by psychiatric patients, and historical documents, is particularly praised for its educational value.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that often link mental health to broader societal issues and art, adding depth to the overall experience. These rotating exhibits keep the content fresh and relevant, encouraging repeat visits.
The architecture of the building itself, with its long corridors and period features, contributes to the immersive experience. However, some visitors note that the layout can be a bit confusing, and more guidance or a clearer route through the exhibits would be helpful.
While the majority of the information is presented in Dutch, many exhibits have English translations available. Some international visitors mention that they would appreciate more comprehensive English descriptions throughout the museum.
The staff is generally described as friendly and knowledgeable, enhancing the visit with their insights. The museum cafe, located in a bright and airy space, receives positive remarks for its atmosphere, though the menu options are limited.
Overall, the Museum Dr. Guislain provides a compelling and educational experience, offering valuable insights into the complex history of mental health treatment. Its unique focus and thoughtful presentation make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in medical history, psychology, or social sciences.
Wat is er nog van het museum overgebleven? Weinig of niets…….
