Königstein Fortress, located in the German state of Saxony, is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe. It is situated in Sächsische Schweiz, a part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The fortress is built on a plateau named after it, standing 352 meters above sea level and to the west of the town of Königstein on the left bank of the Elbe in the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge.

Historical Buildings and Fortress Walls

Königstein Fortress is home to more than 50 buildings, some of which date back to around 1600. These structures provide a glimpse into the military and civilian life on the fortress. The enclosing fortress walls are 1,800 meters long and rise up to 42 meters high on steep sandstone walls.

Transformation into a Museum

On May 29, 1955, the Ministry of Culture of the German Democratic Republic took over Königstein Fortress and transformed it into a museum. Since then, the fortress has served as a museum and heritage site, preserving and showcasing its rich history to visitors from around the world.
