The Castle of the Counts is Flanders' only remaining medieval castle with a virtually intact defense system. Inside the castle are the Museum of Justice and Weapons. The Justice Museum displays court objects and torture instruments: restraints from the Central Prison and from the mentally ill men's asylum and instruments of the last executioner of Ghent. The Weapons Museum displays the historic weapons collection from the Bijloke, including ivory and mother-of-pearl inlaid pistols, crossbows and maces.

Gravensteen, also known as the Castle of the Counts, is a medieval castle located in the heart of Ghent, Belgium. This well-preserved fortress offers visitors a glimpse into the city's rich history. The castle's imposing architecture and strategic location make it a prominent landmark in Ghent.
Visitors appreciate the opportunity to explore the castle's various rooms and chambers, including the armory, torture chamber, and count's residence. The audio guide, available in multiple languages, provides informative commentary on the castle's history and its former inhabitants. Many reviewers find this guide helpful in understanding the context and significance of different areas within the castle.
The panoramic views of Ghent from the castle's ramparts are consistently praised by visitors. The ability to walk along the battlements and take in the cityscape is often highlighted as a memorable experience.
However, some visitors note that the steep, narrow staircases can be challenging for those with mobility issues or young children. Additionally, a few reviewers mention that some areas of the castle can feel cramped during peak tourist seasons.
The castle's occasional special exhibitions and events are generally well-received, adding an extra layer of interest to the visit. The gift shop, while small, offers a selection of souvenirs related to the castle and medieval history.
Overall, Gravensteen provides an engaging experience for those interested in medieval history and architecture. Its central location in Ghent makes it easily accessible, and most visitors find the entrance fee reasonable for the experience offered. While it may not have the extensive collections of larger museums, its authentic medieval atmosphere and the chance to explore a real castle make it a worthwhile attraction in Ghent.
