The Canberra Railway Museum is situated in Kingston, within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). It is conveniently located next to the Canberra train station on the Bombala railway line, making it easily accessible for visitors. The museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the rich history of railways in Australia, with a particular focus on Canberra and the southern districts of New South Wales.
The Canberra Railway Museum is home to Australia's oldest operating steam locomotive and one of the world's oldest mainline steam locomotives. This includes the former locomotive no. 1210 of the New South Wales Government Railways, which was built in 1878. The museum also houses Australia's most powerful steam locomotive, formerly known as the New South Wales Beyer, the articulated Garratt steam locomotive no. 6029. These historic locomotives provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of railway technology.
In May 2018, two new non-profit companies were established to manage the Canberra Railway Museum and safeguard its heritage assets. These companies, Capital Region Heritage Rail Limited and ACT Heritage Rail Holdings Limited, are committed to preserving the valuable railway heritage assets under their care and reorienting the museum's activities for the benefit of the Canberra region and its people.
