Wittstock, officially known as Wittstock/Dosse, is a historic town located in the German state of Brandenburg, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Berlin. The town's history dates back to the Middle Ages, with its first documented mention in 946.
The medieval character of Wittstock is well preserved in its historic old town, which is surrounded by one of the most complete ancient town wall systems in northern Germany, featuring three gate towers and parts of the original fortifications. The town's most prominent landmark is the Castle of the Bishops of Havelberg, which now houses the Museum of the Thirty Years' War, commemorating the significant Battle of Wittstock that took place in 1636.
The region is characterized by its natural surroundings, including the Dosse River and the Brandenburg countryside. Culturally, Wittstock maintains its historical heritage while functioning as a regional center for arts and local traditions in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district.
