Weingarten is a city located in the district of Ravensburg in southern Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The city is particularly known for its impressive Baroque basilica, the Basilica of St. Martin and Oswald, which is one of the largest Baroque churches north of the Alps.
Founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1056, the religious heritage of Weingarten has significantly shaped its cultural identity. The city developed around the monastery and has preserved much of its historical character. Today, Weingarten is also an important educational center, home to the Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences.
The annual "Blutritt" (Ride of the Holy Blood) procession, one of the largest equestrian processions in Europe, represents a significant cultural and religious tradition that has been practiced here since the Middle Ages.
