Wantagh is a hamlet located in Nassau County on Long Island, New York. Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Merokee, the area was later settled by European colonists in the 17th century. The community was named after the Wantagh Native Americans, a subdivision of the Merokee tribe.
Today, Wantagh is primarily a residential suburban community, known locally as "The Gateway to Jones Beach" due to its proximity to the famous Jones Beach State Park, one of New York's most popular recreational areas. The area has preserved some of its historical heritage through sites like the Wantagh Museum, housed in the preserved Wantagh Railroad Station building, which showcases local history and railroad memorabilia. The community maintains a strong connection to both its historical roots and modern suburban culture, offering residents and visitors access to cultural activities, parks, and educational facilities.
