Volcano is a small historic town located in Amador County, California, in the heart of California's Gold Country. Established during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s, this former mining community is situated in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains at an elevation of approximately 2,000 feet. The town was named after its location in a bowl-shaped valley which early miners thought resembled a volcanic crater.
Today, Volcano remains a well-preserved example of a Gold Rush-era town, with several historic buildings and structures still standing. The surrounding area features scenic landscapes and is close to several state parks and recreational areas, offering visitors a glimpse into California's rich mining heritage while serving as a gateway to outdoor activities in the region.
