Vimoutiers is a small commune located in the Orne department in Normandy, northern France. The town is situated in the heart of the Pays d'Auge region, an area known for its dairy production, particularly cheese and butter.
Vimoutiers has historical significance as it was heavily damaged during World War II, with about 90% of the town destroyed during bombing in 1944. After the war, the town was rebuilt with significant support from the Canadian government.
The town is notably the birthplace of Marie Harel, who is credited with creating Camembert cheese in the late 18th century. A bronze statue in the town center commemorates her contribution to French culinary heritage. Today, Vimoutiers maintains its agricultural character while preserving its cultural heritage through local museums and historical sites.
