Ville-sous-la-Ferté is a small commune located in the Grand Est region of northeastern France, in the department of Aube. The town is primarily known as the site of the historic Clairvaux Abbey (Abbaye de Clairvaux), founded in 1115 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux.

This former Cistercian monastery, which played a significant role in medieval French religious history, was converted into a high-security prison during the French Revolution and continues to serve as a penitentiary today. The abbey-prison complex represents an important piece of French architectural and cultural heritage, reflecting the transition of the site from a place of religious contemplation to a state institution. The surrounding area is characterized by its rural landscape and traditional Champagne architecture.
