Herkimer is a historic village located in Herkimer County, New York State, situated along the Mohawk River. The village, named after German immigrant and Revolutionary War hero General Nicholas Herkimer, was incorporated in 1807. The area is particularly known for the distinctive "Herkimer Diamonds," which are actually double-terminated quartz crystals found in the region.
The village played a significant role in the industrial development of the Mohawk Valley, particularly during the construction and operation of the Erie Canal. Today, Herkimer maintains its small-town character while serving as an educational center, home to Herkimer County Community College. The village's cultural heritage is reflected in its preserved historic architecture, including several buildings from the 19th century, and its various cultural institutions that showcase the region's rich history.
