Turners Falls is a village and census-designated place within the town of Montague in Franklin County, Massachusetts. The village was established in the 19th century as an industrial community, taking advantage of the power generated by the Connecticut River's Great Falls. Named after Captain William Turner, who led a significant colonial militia action at the falls in 1676, the village retains much of its historical industrial character.
The area is known for its rich Native American history, particularly related to the prehistoric archaeological sites along the Connecticut River. Today, Turners Falls is experiencing a cultural renaissance, with its historic brick mill buildings being repurposed for arts and cultural spaces. The village's downtown district features well-preserved 19th-century architecture and a growing arts community, while the power canal and falls continue to be prominent features of the landscape.
