Tilbury is a historic port town located on the north bank of the River Thames in Essex, England. The town is primarily known for its deep-water port, Tilbury Docks, which has played a significant role in British maritime history since the 16th century.
The area gained historical significance when Queen Elizabeth I delivered her famous Tilbury Speech to troops in 1588, who were assembled to defend the country against the Spanish Armada. The town's most prominent historical landmark is Tilbury Fort, a 16th-century fortification that was later reinforced in the 17th century and remains one of the finest examples of Dutch-style defensive architecture in England.
While traditionally an industrial and port town, Tilbury has also developed cultural venues and community spaces that reflect its working-class heritage and maritime history.
