Thiepval is a commune in the Somme department in northern France, historically significant for its role during World War I. The village became the site of intense fighting during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Today, it is most notably known for the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, one of the largest war memorials in France.
This imposing brick and limestone monument, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, commemorates more than 72,000 British and South African soldiers who fell during the Somme battles and have no known grave.
