Takamatsu is a port city and the capital of Kagawa Prefecture on Japan's Shikoku island. The city serves as a significant gateway to Shikoku via the Great Seto Bridge, connecting it to Honshu, Japan's main island. Known historically as an important castle town during the Edo period, Takamatsu retains elements of its cultural heritage while functioning as a modern regional administrative and economic center.

The city is particularly renowned for its traditional Japanese landscape garden, Ritsurin Garden, which dates back to the early Edo period and represents one of the finest examples of Japanese garden architecture. The city also has a vibrant contemporary arts scene, notably influenced by its proximity to several islands in the Seto Inland Sea that host various art installations and museums as part of the Setouchi Triennale art festival.

Traditional crafts, particularly lacquerware known as 'Kagawa-nuri,' and udon noodles are integral parts of the local cultural identity.
