The town is particularly known for its cultural heritage, having been home to several notable artists and writers. Most famously, it was the residence of Norman Rockwell, whose works captured American life and who depicted Stockbridge's Main Street in one of his most celebrated paintings. The town has also been an important center for art and music, with the Berkshire Theatre Festival calling it home since 1928.
