Steinkjer is a municipality and town in Trøndelag county, Norway, serving as an important regional center in the northern part of the Trøndelag region. Located at the northernmost point of the Trondheim Fjord, the town has a rich history dating back to the Viking Age.
The area around Steinkjer has been continuously inhabited since the Stone Age, as evidenced by various archaeological findings. The modern town was established as a trading post in 1857 and has since developed into an administrative and commercial center. During World War II, Steinkjer experienced significant destruction but was rebuilt in a distinctive 1940s architectural style, which still characterizes parts of the town center today.
