Smithfield is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, located in the north-central part of the state. Originally settled in the 17th century, the town has transformed from a rural farming community into a suburban area while maintaining much of its historic character. The town played a significant role in Rhode Island's industrial revolution, particularly through its textile mills along the Woonasquatucket River.
Today, Smithfield is known for being the home of Bryant University, a prominent business-focused institution, and for preserving several historic sites that reflect its colonial and industrial heritage. The area features a blend of residential neighborhoods, business districts, and preserved open spaces, including the Wolf Hill Forest Preserve and Georgiaville Pond, which provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
